Tests for STDs

Tests to detect STDs  are available at Medica Center FEM, but what are Sexually Transmitted Diseases?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are defined as infections that can be transmitted during sexual relations. They not only affect a large part of our population, but can also lead to complications with consequences such as male and female sterility, ectopic pregnancies , cervical cancer, premature mortality, congenital syphilis, fetal losses, low birth weight, premature births, etc.

Tests to detect   STDs  or  sexually transmitted diseases can vary in different diseases as we can see:

Chlamydia and gonorrhea

It is performed through a urine test or by inserting a swab into the penis in men and into the cervix in women. The sample taken is analyzed in a laboratory.

HPV

There is no HPV test for men, in whom the infection is detected only by visual inspection or a biopsy of genital warts. In women, the test consists of aPap testthat checks the cervix for abnormal cells.

Genital herpes

There is no conclusive test for this, but your doctor may take a sample of the blisters or ulcers if you have them to test in a lab. However, if the result is negative, that does not rule out herpes as a cause of genital ulcers.

HIV

The HIV test is the only viable way to know if you are infected or not and is done with a blood or saliva sample. If you have HIV symptoms you should take the test and repeat it after 3 months, this is because the body takes time to develop enough antibodies to allow its detection in analysis.

We must take into account that the only way to know for sure if you have a sexually transmitted disease STD is to get tested for STDs . Remember that most people who have sexually transmitted diseases do not feel sick and sometimes do not have symptoms.

Use a condom in all sexual relations and avoid STIs.
